If You're Happy and You Know It

Hello everyone!!
Guess what.. I felt happy this week. Let's all celebrate🎉 woohoo!! I've realized that your really need to celebrate the little things. For example. The moon this week (a waxing crescent if you were wondering ;)) was beautiful! Yesterday we were walking through a trailer park around sunset and I looked up at the sky and thought "wow I know God is real because only a loving Heavenly Father could give us a pretty sky like this." So let's all celebrate little joys everyday:)
Hermana Tea and I found 2 new friends to teach this week!!! Can I get a hallelujah?! We were so happy!! We taught a lesson outside a trailer home on cute little plastic chairs. Absolutely classic. I got to testify of God's plan for us and tell someone they have a Heavenly Father who loves them. So awesome. You can enjoy the video of us rejoicing on our drive home🤪
I have been talked into playing the piano at zone conference this week so please pray for me. The elders figured out that I will do anything for oreos and they bought me TWO packs of oreos to convince me to play. I couldn't refuse. So we'll see how it goes.
We also got chick fil a the same day they gave me the Oreos because it was my 100th day as a missionary!! Woot woot! So that was a good day.
Let me tell you something about Texas. The weather here in January is like April in Utah. Actually maybe May in Utah. We did our studies outside yesterday because it was a BEAUTIFUL 70 degrees outside.👌
Now I will leave you with this funny story. We were supposed to have a lesson yesterday but they didn't answer the door🥴 so we left a note. As we turned to walk away, an ice cream truck drove by on the street. Then we see two kids SPRINT out from behind another trailer and start running after it. One of the kids was a little chubbier and so he fell behind. But he kept jogging with all his might.😂 This chubby little boy was panting trying to catch the ice cream truck and then he stretches out his hand and yells "HEYYYY!" Trying to get it to stop🤣 it was like his entire happiness was driving away from him, just out of reach. I almost peed my pants it was hilarious.

I love you all and hope you all see something to smile about today:)

Sorry for my lack of pictures. I'll do better this week

Parents! Hello!
That looks like such a fun vacation! It is very beautiful down there. I'd like to go back and actually enjoy it without all of the teenage angst I had last time. But that looks fun!
I also am not a fan of teenage boys either dad. But I think you will be a good example to them. I know that young men need good examples. And a good listener.
I played the piano again this week and it went well. The lady who picks the hymns posts them on facebook and tells the members to practice before sunday so we can sound good... no one practices.
We had some good visits and we found two people to teach this week! We are excited.
We met this nice Iranian man in a park one day. He is now our friend. He calls me the "future astronomist."
Most days I feel happy. Which is a blessing! I've started to realize how hard it is to be with someone 24/7 but we're getting along. I've learned that finding joy in the little things is really important. If my hair smells good, rejoice! If the sky looks pretty, rejoice! If I got to speak spanish, rejoice!! And I tried to stop negative self talk. Other missionaries use it all the time and I really am not a fan. So I decided that I'm just not going to talk like that.
I've eaten so many oreos this week. The elders have learned that I will do anything for oreos and so now I am playing the piano in zone conference😬 I'm accompanying one of the elders who is singing and they bought me 2 packs of oreos for it! So I've eaten a lot of them.
I can't think of anything cool or interesting to share.. each day looks very similar. But the weather here is so nice and I can wear short sleeves and not be too cold. Most days I forget its winter.

Love you guys!

P.S. Ya'll I'm At 3 Months!

Hello everyone! How are you doing? How often did you feel happy and grateful this week?

I had a great week! I've gotten to the point where I sing in front of my companion. It's literally a rare privilege to hear me sing at full volume. She probably hates it but she's too kind to tell me to be quiet.

We handed out a Book of Mormon this week! This nice man stopped next to us on his bike while we were walking to a park. He was a preacher who loves the Lord. I love meeting people who love Jesus. He told us about his faith, how he found faith, and which beliefs he holds most dear. He told us about his thoughts on when Jesus comes again. Usually people have some strange ideas but as he was speaking I kept thinking "this man would love the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints." We gave him a Book of Mormon and read Alma 26:12 with him. He asked us some questions about the Book of Mormon and then we gave him our phone number and he went on his way. I really felt uplifted and happy to have met someone like that.

Also it is cold and so wet. The other day it was pouring rain so of course I had to go run around in it. I got so wet and I was cold for the rest of the day. And yesterday we drove out into the boonies of our area to try and make some contacts and I was bundled up so tight because it was frigid. Thank goodness I brought a coat.

I had to play the piano in sacrament meeting and I was flipping out. I was so nervous. And these two members who I love so dearly drove 30 minutes to come hear me play at 9am. And they made us masks with puppies on them. I felt so loved!! When people make an effort for you that's when you know they care :') this sweet little Columbian lady and her husband made me feel loved.

Quick invitation for yall: I don't know if all of you struggle with this but I do so I'm going to share. I invite you to make a conscious effort to stop making self-deprecating jokes. The little comments like "wow I'm stupid" or "I'm so ugly the mirror is gonna crack" or stuff like that. You know. You should talk kindly to yourself and others. Anyway that's just my 2 cents. Pray and listen to God and you'll be good.

Please enjoy these selfies. They would make great lock screen pictures I think🤷‍♀️

Mom and Dad,
Hello! I made it through the week!!💪pretty cool. I had a much better week this week. That was my goal and I did it. I read a talk called Three Sisters by Elder Uchtdorf and it inspired me to be better. To be happier. So I sang a lot this week and laughed at myself, laughed at silly situations, and prayed a lot when i felt negative thoughts coming. And I did it! I also was majorly stressed this week because last week the bishopric asked me to start playing the piano in Sacrament Meeting😳 they gave me the songs on Wednesday night and I knew none of them... one of them isn't even in the english hymn book. So I practiced on this little keyboard we took from the church. And I did it! I made plenty of mistakes and my hands were shaking bad, but no one openly laughed at me👍 everyone seemed appreciative. And Hna Tea and the elders were very encouraging. So now I have to do that every week. It will be a test of courage but I'm called to serve. So that involves serving the branch right now.

I am excited for our new mission president! I am going to miss President Guthrie so much though. He has blessed me in so many ways. The picture you sent mom wouldnt focus so I don't know what they look like but they seem like a sweet family. Its 6 months down the road so I'll enjoy my time with the Guthries but I think I will still be in good hands after June.

I loved the scripture thought dad! I like that we are in the same place in the Book of Mormon. I've actually enjoyed reading the war chapters this time around. There is much to be learned. I can probably do better to attribute all of my good qualities and strengths to God. All good things come from Him. So I liked that reminder.

And I watched that video as well. I liked how that leader referred to a mission as "The Lord's University" haha. I like that. I love school and this is just a different kind of learning experience!

Love you guys!

Choose Your Own Adventure

Welcome. I want to spice this up and hopefully make some of yall smile, so please, choose your own adventure, and enjoy.

If you would already like to be done with this email go to number 5

If you would like to hear about struggles I had go to number 2

If you would like a spiritual thought go to number 1

If you would like to hear the miracle of the tummy growl go to number 4

If you would like a nice laugh go to number 3

1) Deuteronomy 31:6
6 Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the Lord thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

Through struggle and trial and sorrow and pain, stick with the Savior. He's not going to leave you.

2) Guys there are so many bugs. I'm not sure how I will survive the summer when all the REAL bugs come out to play. There was a ladybug flying around our house last week and I thought it was a bee for like an hour. I wanted to cry.

3) we have a lesson every week with this really nice couple from Columbia. Well they were making each other laugh so much and then when the time came to say the closing prayer, Hermana Gonzalez started "querido Padre Celestial....." paused and then burst out laughing. I laughed so hard. She literally couldn't keep it together. It took her three tries to get through the prayer and I had to duck out of the camera so she couldn't see me laugh.

4) we were in a lesson with a sweet couple from Mexico. I was soooooo hungry and I felt the stomach growl start to creep up. But I didn't want them to hear it and then feel bad that they didn't feed us. So I prayed so hard. I was like "I know God will stop this stomach growl." AND IT DIDNT GROWL!! miracle!! It was on the verge the whole time but I walked out of that lesson with my head held high because miracles are real😂

5) much love to all of you! Keep trekking! And please be nice to people! Give a compliment or pray for someone or give a nice gift or note. Just be nice:) and Happy New Year!! Make some awesome goals💪

Hello parents!
I'm glad to hear we have a fridge! That sure will be nice. Kind of a bummer about the door though. You should get some cool handle to replace the doorknob.

Dad, Alma 42 is really great! I think it helps us understand the nature of Deity a little more. It's not power to do whatever you want, there are eternal laws they follow. I think it shows Heavenly Fathers profound love for us that He made a plan that can save us despite those laws. Like He formulated a loophole so justice and mercy can both be satisfied. And when we understand that we can understand the whole plan. Cool stuff.

I had a really rough week. I'm not quite certain why; I think there are probably multiple reasons. But it's been a really hard time for me. Realizing that my whole 2021 will be on a mission is hard. And it frustrates me when other people are so gung-ho about missionary work. I know it's good but I just don't quite feel it and so it bothers me. Theres an interesting principle in Ether 12:27 at the beginning of the verse. "If men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness." Well I'm drawing closer to the Savior as a missionary but that also means I'm seeing a lot more of my weaknesses. That's what He said would happen. Perhaps that's why it's gotten harder I'm not sure. But this is hard! I'm really tired of being in training because I feel like people talk down to me and you know how I hate that. And some lady we had an appointment with told me she thought I was 12. You think that after years and years of hearing this exact same remark that I would be insensitive to it... but no. I didn't even want to teach after that. I wanted to make some rude remark back. I don't know how Jesus did it, loving people that insulted Him. There have been so many times where I've thought to myself, "why don't people just keep their comments to themselves?" Like just be quiet. I know, I know, I have lots of work to do to be more like the Savior.

But anyway yeah this week was very hard for me. We watched a mission devotional about Joseph Smith this week. How he went through so much suffering, but he did so much good for the world. So it's okay.

Could you send me the lyrics to "As the bridegroom to his chosen" everytime i want to sing it i can only remember a couple lines. Also, what is that quote from a league of their own about baseball being hard? I'd like to write that down.

Love you!
Emma:)

I Have A Story

Hello everyone!! This week was good! Merry Christmas to all! I just want to share one story that happened to me this week. Enjoy.
I title this story "Juan Fransisco Garcia [something] from Chicacao Guatemala and his dead bird."
As we were walking home, this man drove past us and said god bless you! We waved back to him. Then he drove a little further and stopped, backed up, and stopped next to us to talk to us. In the middle of the road by the way. He was talking about God and his family and we said do you speak spanish? So then he started talking to us in spanish. He showed us his bible and said he loves God (we were like awesome!) so Hna tea started writing our information down on a pass along card. We were standing in the middle of traffic and people were trying to drive around us so he motioned us closer to his truck. Then he told us his truck was his home and his church and his friend and then he told us he wanted to show us something... then he turns around and pulls out a dead bird. A dead bird. In his hands. And it looked like it had been dead for a while because it was deflated and the feathers were blowing off in the wind toward my face. (If you didn't just say "ew" then idk what you're doing.) We flinched to say the least and backed up a few steps. I turned to Hermana tea and I was like "we are not giving him our phone number." He told us that the bird was his brother and he found it so he could bury it because God loves the bird too.... mhm okay nice. Then he put the dead bird away and we ended the conversation. Or so we thought. He drives a little further and then stops again, gets out of his car (which is still in the middle of the street), goes to the back of his truck and pulls out a rotten pineapple and then came to give it to us. He handed it to us and said "here, when you eat it, always remember Juan Francisco Garcia [something] from Chicacao Guatemala." Then he proceeded to tell us that in Guatemala he would always give food to the poor people. He said "jesus said when people are thirsty...? We give them what?" Us: "water" him: "good! And when they are cold?" Us: "a coat" him: "perfect! And when they are hungry?" Us: "food" him: "good. So here is this pineapple and when you eat it you will always remember [insert name again]" then he told us to eat the pineapple a few more times (we obviously did not because he has dead bird diseases on his hands) and then he said goodbye and drove away. A very sweet man and I will never forget him.

I hope you have enjoyed this story.

Now a quick spiritual thought!
I was reading a little thing my sister gave me that has a scripture on it on it. I had read it before but this scripture really touched my heart this week.
"Let us fix our eyes on Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and is sat down at the right hand of the throne of God."
Beautiful!! "For the joy that was set before Him." That joy was our salvation! He did it for us. So let us fix our eyes on Him. He is the light. He is everything. Turn to Christ. My dear family and friends I know Christ lives. Isn't that awesome! We have a Savior. All is not lost. Imagine if we couldn't fix our mistakes. Man that would be rough. But we can. We can be happy. And clean. And find joy. Through Jesus Christ.
Okay I'm done. Sorry for all of you who cringed at that but I just wanted to share a little bit about Christ.

Love y'all! :)
Hermana Eastman
Enjoy this picture dump! Notice me clutching my hand in that one pick? Yeah Hna tea accidentally kicked my hand when she jumped and I thought my hand was broken lol😂 I legitimately thought to myself "what if I can never write again and my career is ruined?" Haha I'm good now

Hi parents!
Hello!
Dad
How are the slopes? I wish I could go skiing with you! Dad we are at the same place in the book of Mormon!! I actually highlighted that scripture you sent me this week. And thank you for your thoughts because I need them right now. Our teaching is so slow. And our finding is even slower. And from what I've heard it's gotten worse just this last transfer... the transfer I got here. And me being me I can't help but think that if I were more experienced or tried harder or was more dedicated or never took any breaks, that I could be doing more good here. And maybe that's partly the cause but I highlighted verse 30 because sometimes that's just the way it is. I love D&C 122:17 "Therefore, dearly beloved brethren, let us cheerfully do all things that lie in our power; and then may we stand still, with the utmost assurance, to see the salvation of God, and for his arm to be revealed."
Now clearly Joseph Smith said these words under a different context but I feel like it applies to me. Do what you can. But the Lords plan is over all, so stand still and trust that His purposes will be accomplished.
Anyways thank you for your words because that has been a struggle for the past few weeks.

Mom
First, can you use almond milk for cheesy ham casserole?
Second, thank you for reaching out to Mallory! It means a lot. I miss her very much as well. She is my best friend and I feel like I wasted months that I could have spent with her. I do get to talk with her every week and I'm very grateful for that. Be diligent with school!! I know that its rough, especially online, but I love school and I'm happy you get to continue your education! And congratulations on accomplishing your first lesson!!👏🎉 did you use breakout rooms? I also think that helping others is a lifestyle. I really believe that greatest stumbling block is selfishness and pride. Really. Pick a problem and trace it back to one of those two. It's not that difficult to do. That's something I've been trying to do for LITERALLY years. "Eradicate pride." And selfishness feeds pride. Service is a great way to counteract that.

I had some wacky experiences this week. (I will put one in my weekly email so stay tuned. Sneak peak: a homeless man showed us his dead bird and gave us a rotten pineapple.) I'm pretty tired and trying to figure out what it means to "do good." Sometimes I think to myself "am I even doing any good?" Theoretically I know the answer is probably yes but theres no measuring stick that i can use to figure out where I'm at. But all is well here in Texas. The Lord lives and what else could we possibly hope for?

Love you!
ps good luck with your shot dad, I hope they use needles and not super powerful airguns.
I took this picture of a tree. Thought it was pretty cool.

Hey You! Jesus Loves You!

Hello👋 I'm going to start with the not so great news so then I can slowly build up to optimism. We are in quarantineeee. Someone we taught recently told us she tested positive so we have been put in quarantine. She texted us that she tested positive (in spanish obviously) and I said to Hermana Tea "let's throw it in google translate. Maybe we are understanding it wrong." ....nope. Haha but we're trekking through. I try to make a craft each day to spice things up. The good news is that neither of us feel sick! And we get out of quarantine on christmas day :) so that's a happy christmas present!

We went on a run on friday morning. Shocked. It felt really good though but the next day I stood up and wanted to die. My body was like "I hate you" and I was like "I'm doing this for your own good." So we'll see if we go running again.

During our accountability call with our district leader, Hermana Tea was like "Hermana Eastman, would you like to account for how much cheesecake you ate today?" And I was like "okay so yes I ate 1/4 of a cheesecake! It's been a hard week." And our district leader responded with "oh wow.. "😂😂 ...you're kidding. I was dying I though it was so funny.

I got to have an interview with President Guthrie which was just the best. The priesthood is real, people! I'm so grateful for the people in my life who hold priesthood keys. I got to have a special, much needed experience that I know I'll remember forever! Cherish the priesthood and the kind leaders and friends you have! Tell someone you love them! When's the last time you called your mom or sister or cousin or friend? I think you should.

Let me know if theres anything I can do for y'all! It would make me happy to be able to help any of you!

Merry Christmas! Think about what the Savior means to you, who He is to you, and why you're grateful He was born!

Hermana Eastman

enjoy these pictures :) sorry for the lack of variety :( but still enjoy :)

Mom and Dad,

My head is itchy.

Mom, I am sad that you can't scratch my head and brush my hair. But I will persevere.

Sad news: I am in quarantine and our most progressing friend has cancelled her baptism. Rough.
Good news: quarantine ends on christmas so we get to do an activity with our district!

So that district meeting will pretty much go from 10-2 on christmas. What do you think will be a better time to call for you? Before or after? Either I think will work for me.

I got to have interviews with President Guthrie this week! He is such a good leader! I'm so grateful for priesthood power! President loves me and he doesn't even know me very well! When he finds out a missionary's scripture he writes their name in his scriptures. So my name will forever be in his scriptures!

I just want to say how grateful I am for you guys! I really can't adequately express it. I've realized that not everyone has a great family life. It's hard for me to wrap my head around this because I always have. You guys are so kind and loving. My companion was telling me about her family life and it just made me so grateful for you. I've never ever doubted that you loved me. And I've never doubted that you love each other. And I've been raised in an intellectually stimulating environment. We're a pretty smart family! And we never yell or speak badly about each other. I've never felt uncomfortable or unsafe at home. So anyways, thank you so much. I guess I've never realized what a gift it is to have a good family. I hope my future family will be like our family now.

I can't super think of more to say but I will call today.

Love you!

It's Stormy

Lots of good stuff happened this week!! I'll try to keep it short. Also I have no time so hopefully this makes sense!

We had Christmas conference!! Usually it's the whole mission but with covid, it was only 2 zones together. Still a party though. We drove to Sugarland for it and at the last stoplight we pulled up next to our elders. Of course we had to race them a little bit. Lol Hna Tea got an 'aggressive driving' from our tiwi (it like tracks our driving) because we whipped around the turn so fast. They barely beat us though:(
We kicked off the conference with such a good talk from a member of the area presidency about the condescension of God. Needless to say "Savior" is the perfect name for Jesus Christ.
For the fun stuff, we had the choice to either watch a movie or play jeopardy... if you know anything about me you know I was the first one in that jeopardy room. And you bet your bottom dollar that my team absolutely destroyed everyone else and we all won Chick fil a giftcards.
For lunch we had some legit texas bbq! Rudy's bbq was bomb. There were 7 different kinds of meat.

We almost got attacked by a mutant bird at the local pond. Luckily my fight or flight instincts kicked in.

We've asked all of the members to share light the world with their friends and one sister told us she wrote a letter to Santa asking him to share the Christ child video with everyone (this is like a grown woman)... we were like sweet if he shared it that would be billions of people!

During a training call President Guthrie told us he has bruised Derek Jeter with a pitch before. I was losing my mind!!
President was telling us what his plan was if he was ever charged on the mound and he said "Always the serve and volley. Hit em with the 1 2, elbow to the chest and get outta there before there's a dogpile" It was the best training call ever.

I ate a tamale and no one was as shocked as I was when I actually enjoyed it.

We share the branch with a trio of elders and they're so funny. We walked out of church yesterday and their car door was open. So we were like "Elders, did you mean to do that?" And their faces just go slack. Elder finlayson left their car door open for the WHOLE church meeting... during a rainstorm. Hahaha I was laughing so hard. The inside of their car was soaked. He's a new missionary in my transfers group and his trainers were just shaking their heads. But honestly how did none of them notice the door was left open? We're not sure.

Theres been some mega storms and the thunder shakes the barn.

So yeah that's it! Missions are great! Jesus Christ is our Savior! Learn of Him! Follow Him!

Hna Eastman

Hello! I'm still doing good!

Question: Do you want me to add you to my Google photos so you have them? I can create a shared album and then add pictures to it on mondays so you have them? If not no big deal. Just a thought. Yes o no

During one of my training module things we were learning about how to make phone calls and they used clips from "The Phone Call" (BYU) movie! I thought of you mom!

Are Josh and Megan driving separate to Pennsylvania?

Sorry to hear about your quiz mom! That's the worst. I've been there before. But a 93% is still good. Don't start the bad habits that I have of thinking it's all or nothing. Because it's not. Especially at byu you have to be patient w yourself. Theres my little byu advice for ya.

Peach: we called someone from our area book and she actually was interested and we had such a sweet little lesson over the phone!!! At one point she said "you calling me is a sign from God that He is with me" and I almost cried. It was just what I needed because I felt like I wasn't doing any good.
Pit: we had a branch activity but they were watching a movie unapproved for missionaries so we went inside to do some contacting. We called a less active member we've been trying to get in contact with and were like "we don't see you at the activity will you come?" And she was like "I am here. Have a good night" and then hung up..... but like.... she was definitely not at the activity. Major bummer.

When it rains here it really rains here.

(Could not upload the rain video or the mutant bird video onto the blog)

Gator Boys

Highlights of the week!

A member gave us a bag of Cinnamon toast Crunch and I almost cried I was so happy.

My mission President wears yeezys and I rest my case that he is the coolest man ever.

Also he knows David Archuleta. Like are you kidding?? David Archuleta has become my substitute for lany on my mish. Ever heard "o ven, o ven emmanuel" ? because it's so good.

I went to an alligator park today. Pretty sweet. Saw some alligators. Have you ever seen the show "gator boys?" Adolescent Hna Eastman was a big fan.

I fell asleep in personal study. Like twice. Man it was a struggle. But today I found a beautiful scripture while I was studying and I'd love to share it. It is Enos 1:27

27 And I soon go to the place of my rest, which is with my Redeemer; for I know that in him I shall rest. And I rejoice in the day when my mortal shall put on immortality, and shall stand before him; then shall I see his face with pleasure, and he will say unto me: Come unto me, ye blessed, there is a place prepared for you in the mansions of my Father. Amen

I love it!! I can just imagine the tears of joy that I'm going to cry and the overwhelming love we are all going to feel. Look forward with an eye of faith. And treat people with love and kindness.

Love y'all!
Hna Eastman

Greetings parents! I've got some questions and requests.

Are you having a family Christmas zoom?
Will it be on a monday? Just wondering.

Happy birthday mom! Hope you have some good Indian food.

Mom so surprise, the consequences of my lack of household skills has come to haunt me. I don't enjoy cooking and I don't know how to make healthy foods. I don't even know how to be healthy! Like what should I eat? Please help. I need like a meal plan but I don't even know how to do that... probably should've been more willing to learn that before... but alas here we are. Like what healthy snacks can I have? Because I get hungry lots. And I can't just go on pinterest to get ideas!

Also I'd love if you could send me some sheet music (like photo copies of moonlight sonata and silent night if that's not illegal), and the exercise papers in my little white binder. Also everyone here has mini preach my gospels... where do you find those, do you know? Also I should probably have a screen protector for my phone because I don't want to crack or scratch it. It's a Samsung A20.

Dad I want to start a budget journal like where I write down my transactions but I'm not sure the best way to do it. Any tips? I have a budget app on my phone but it's nothing fancy. I want to keep track of what I spend and how much money I have to be smart with it. How can I do that?

It was a good week! Not much rain but it is surprisingly chilly.  We had quite a few member lessons but not many with the friends we're teaching. It was all good. I've gotten to speak quite a bit of Spanish which makes me so happy! Not all of our friends are progressing though:( good thing I'm persistent because we text them every day even if they haven't responded in a week. Some dude we walked past on the street asked if we had "an extra Mormon book!" We were like absolutely we do! He was cool but he was also with some people who were smoking... so hopefully they come unto Christ! I also saw a chihuahua with nast unclipped nails. I was not a fan.
When I start feeling down I read the scriptures. I read a talk where someone (a prophet I think) said the best washing machine for your mind is the scriptures. It's so true! I've been so blessed in the scriptures. Also singing helps me feel better. When my thoughts get overwhelming I can calm them down by humming.

Love you guys! I'll call today.

Hna Eastman

(Her companion, Hermana Tea, is a great cook/baker.  So she isn't starving!)
